The town was peaceful for many years. Menda was still doing chores most of the day having nothing else for herself. Algera was now the captain of the city guards which allowed her some more off time but also papers to deal with at home. The two reluctantly changed their parents' office into Algera’s office, though they kept their parent’s desk in the corner.
The two were walking to the market to pick up food when a shadow flew over them. They look up to see the dragon right before the dragon blows a breath of fire throughout the town. It did a few laps around the town lighting it up before it then crashed into the gate starting to attack the guards that had been stationed there.
There were pieces of burning wood raining down as Menda followed Algera towards the gate. Algera turned to her, grabbing her shoulders. “Get back home, you’ll be safer there.” She let her go and turned back to where the dragon was still fighting other guards.
Menda grabs her arm to stop her. “No, you can’t. You’ll die.”
Algera pulled her arm free. “It’s my job. If I die, it would be for others. You should go. Be safe.” She started to head towards the dragon once again as Menda watched on, shaking slightly.
She couldn't let her sister die. She ran to the center where the coat laid. She didn’t know if it could help, she didn’t even know if it existed.
Once she got there, the box had part of the wall charred off. She climbed over part of it to see that the coat lay there in the middle. “I need your help,” she said to it but there was nothing. “Please.”
She leaned against the edge of the box to try to touch it. Suddenly the box broke, making her tumble into the box, having her land on the coat. She lifted it up looking at it, trying to remember the stories she was told when she was younger.
She took a quick breath before shoving her hand into its sleeve. Immediately a weak voice filtered into her head, “You're either brave or stupid to talk to me.”
She jumped slightly, “I’ve been talking while on the box for years. Why is it different now?”
“I haven’t had a source of power for all these years. So I have had no means to talk.”
“Oh. Do you always need power?”
“Yes, I cannot do anything without a power source.”
Menda was silent as she listened to the sounds of the dragon in the distance. “Can you do anything?”
“The only thing I can do is absorb magic.”
“Is that any magic?”
The coat chuckled. “Are you hoping I could help with the fight I hear outside?” When she didn’t say anything, he continued, “I could help with that I guess. I can absorb some non-magical things.”
“Like dragon fire?”
“Yes, since it is a magical beast. If you would put me on. I could do it.”
“I want your word that you will help them.”
“Of course.”
She looked back up at the stars that were getting covered up by smoke. “All right.”
She stood up holding the coat out in front of her for a moment. It was dusty but she found the front opening, finding she had placed her hand in the sleeve end originally.
She shoved one arm in and felt like there was static surrounding it. She took a breath before putting her other arm in; once it hit her shoulders it seemed to take over. The hood came up and the front closed, absorbing her into what seemed like nothingness.
Calbas wiped the dust off himself looking at the fight going on by the gate. “I should let this stupid town burn for how long I was in there. But since I gave my word I might as well help.”
