Sam had never seen a house so big. The two had decided to move in together to get to know each other better. Sam had suggested it and was excited when Elbert had accepted, but now, looking at where they would be living they were now a little scared.
Elbert turned to her with a shy smile. “I hope this house is good enough?”
Sam stood a little straighter, pulling all of their courage together, “of course.” They smiled brightly at him.
Elbert perked up and grabbed Sam's hand, pulling them towards the house. “Then let me show you around.” The main entrance made them freeze once again with the chandelier but couldn't stop for long because Elbert was still pulling them around.
The rest of the house was just as fancy looking, and Sam was struggling to deal with it all when Elbert stopped outside a room on the opposite side of where his bedroom was. “And this is your room.”
The room was bigger than their family home. Sam was once again stunned. The room was pretty simple. It didn't have many items; only a bed, a dresser, and some shelves, but they were still beautiful.
Elbert pushed them lightly into the room, and Sam looked around as he did. "I know there isn't much, but this week I wanted us to go shopping together to make it fit you better, Mousie.” They looked at him. “I want us to pick things together so that when we get married, you can just bring them into our bedroom.”
Sam looked around for a moment before turning to Elbert with a small smirk. “So should I accept that as a proposal?"
Elbert's eyes went wide before shaking his head. “I wouldn't have given you such a poor proposal."
Sam chuckled, “I see I’ll wait then.”
Elbert blushed. “Well I–” there was a knock on the door and the two turned to see a woman standing there.
“I’m sorry to interrupt you,” the woman said. “But Lester said lunch was ready.”
She turned away, but Elbert called out, “Loretta, could you actually get Lester and Lloyd?” She turned back around and nodded before leaving.
“Who are they?” Sam asked.
Elbert held out his hand for them, which Sam took. “They are the three you’ll talk to the most of all the servants.” He led them down to the dining room to the table, having a salad placed at two of the seats and three people waiting for them.
The two ate salads as Sam was introduced to Loretta, the head maid, who gave orders to most of the other servants. Lester, the chef who made all the food. And Lloyd, the driver of the house though Elbert drove himself some times. It would be hard for Sam to adjust, but they knew they would get used to their new life, eventually.
Time moved on, and before Sam knew it, they were standing on a beach at sunset with Elbert down on one knee. Even if this was their goal, the moment was a surprise, and Sam couldn't stop the happy tears. They nodded their head before throwing themselves into Elbert, who hugged them back.
“I'll be the best wife you've ever had,” Sam whispered into his ear.
Elbert squeezed them before shaking his head. “Do you really want that?"
His words made some of the happiness fade. "What do you mean?” He had just asked, and they didn't know what they had done to change his mind so fast.
Elbert pulled back to look Sam in the eye. “You always have this distant look in your eyes whenever you use those kinds of terms for yourself.” Sam’s eyes went wide, but he continued. “And some of my friends have told me you've used masculine terms for yourself when they've been at the bar without me."
They bit their lip before switching into Sammy, even so they couldn't keep the nervousness from their voice. “I could be the perfect husband then." Sam was hopeful this was the answer Elbert wanted.
He watched them for a moment before shaking his head. “No, that won't do either." Sam stayed silent, trying not to shake. "You still have that distant look in your eyes.”
Sam’s eyes went somehow wider. This was the closest anyone had figured out their scheme, and they didn't know if this would be the point where Elbert would break up with them.
But the question Elbert asked made Sam freeze. "Is there another term you would prefer?”
“Like?” Sam whispered.
“Like partner?”
Once the word left Elbert's mouth, a blush covered Sam's face. It was too close to themselves, too truthful. “Partner? I could…” they could feel the blush somehow getting stronger. “I could be your partner." They tried to fill their words with confidence but weren't sure they had succeeded.
Elbert stared at them for a moment before smiling brightly, pulling them back into a tight hug. "Yes, that's what it is. That's the one.”

Planning a wedding was surprisingly easy. Not only was their mother more than happy to help, but whatever they wanted, Elbert was willing to buy. He had a few requests, but all of them were simple and easy to blend into everything Sam wanted.
There was only one thing that seemed impossible to decide for the wedding—what Sam should wear.
They knew what was expected of them; they knew people thought they were a woman because of their feminine features. But they didn't like any of the dresses they saw. None fit how they wanted or looked as good as it would be assumed.
Sam flipped through another book of wedding dresses, frowning at everyone they saw. They were so absorbed in frowning at the book they didn't notice Elbert had entered the room until he sat next to them. "Still haven't found something?”
